Domain names
I really like a domain name, but how can I justify spending thousands of dollars?
A great domain name is like a storefront in a prime location: it may look like a crazy expense, but you know it will pay for itself if you have a solid business model. An expensive domain name can be a very wise investment as the first piece of your business puzzle. Domain names appreciate over time, and appreciate especially fast when competing brands in different industries call themselves the same name.Just look at the recent news over Proof.com: a company called Notarize launched a new product on the domain they had just acquired, when multiple successful businesses, including useProof.com and shopProof.com had called themselves "Proof" for years. Who do you think already owns the search?Secure your domain name now - it'll pay for itself many times over (and if you're wise about it, it can pay itself off right away as a tax write-off - but check with your accountant first!)

🤔 What Should I Name My Business?
Naming can be complicated: what sounds or looks like the right name may not be easy to own for a small business,
or may already have existing trademarks.
CONSIDERATIONS
When naming a business, product, or project, a few questions to keep in mind:
- Shorter may be better, but can you stand out? Using common words as business names can make it difficult for you to be found through online search engines.
- Will your business mostly operate online or offline? If online, your domain name is essential, but social handle availability (and brand name consistency) also matters.
- Making up a name? Matching words, dropping vowels or creating alternate spellings can be great solutions, but be aware of the pitfalls (accidental meanings when word combinations are capitalized differently, spelling difficulty when names are communicated via word-of-mouth, trademark issues.
If your business or project will find its audience online, here are a few tips to save you time, headaches, and, potentially, lots of money down the road:
- Brainstorm 30-50 potential names, starting with keywords that describe your business, dictionary synonyms, word associations.
- Score each of the names based on memorability, availability, and ownability. (Learn more and download our free Brand Name Scoring Sheet here.)
- Take the top 5-7 names and do a deeper research. Is the name associated with any trademarks? (Use Trademark247.com.) Is the .com available? Are social handles available?
- Share your top name options with your friends, family, and if you can, potential customers. How do people respond to your favorites?
- Still can't find the right name? Get some help. Naming consultants or agencies can do all of the above and more for you, usually for a few thousand dollars. We can also help, starting at $499
